What Are Backlinks?
Backlinks are simply the links pointing to your site. When a website has a clickable link or a hyperlink that redirects to your website - this is called a backlink. In the eyes of Google, a website has more trust and more visibility if it has backlinks coming from reliable sources, but keep in mind that more backlinks do not always translate to higher visibility. The quality of those links is important. In other words, they need to come from websites with authority and that are relevant to your content. For example, if you have a restaurant that sells Italian food, it would not make a lot of sense if you had several backlinks from a pet shop half across the country, would it? Such links are considered irrelevant, and they impact negatively on your website.
Types Of Backlinks
In basic terms there are two types of backlinks in SEO:
When a website links to another website naturally, without putting the “no-follow" tag, it is considered as a dofollow backlink. Dofollow backlinks pass authority to the website which helps it rank at a higher speed on Google.
The second type of backlinks is the no follow backlinks. These backlinks contain the no-follow tag and aren’t considered to have much use in the SEO perspective. This is because when Google crawls a website, these backlinks are simply not read and the search engine cannot track them.
Now let’s move further to check the importance of backlinks in SEO.
Why Are Backlinks So Important?
1. Search engines measure the relevancy of a website through the number of backlinks it has. Google, for instance, considers that if the web page has been linked many times by the other pages, it must have value.
2. The other major benefit of creating backlinks for SEO is to get more organic traffic. As said above, Google places more emphasis on pages that have a higher number of quality backlinks, so your website might rank higher.
Apart from this, another major advantage of backlinks in SEO is faster indexing. It is said that a website which has a higher number of backlinks may get discovered faster by search engine bots. Therefore, your pages could get indexed more quickly in Google, compared to other sites.
Backlinks are important for your website in order to become more visible to search engines, and thus resulting in a better placement for clients when entering a search query. I’m sure you would agree that your business needs to stay visible in order to reach your goals. Consider reaching out to directories that are relevant to your niche market to see if you can work with them to create a backlink that will point to your website. Or perhaps contact niche publications to see if you can do a guest blog for them. Get creative, but also stay relevant to your business. After all, the last thing you would want is to lower your ranking by having too many backlinks from sites that don’t have anything to do with what you have to offer.
